With the current economic recession, many people are cutting costs and trying to stay within tighter budgets. Unfortunately, for many people, this includes giving up things such as gym memberships, individual exercise classes, and the purchase of new home workout equipment. You don’t have to let the economy derail you from sticking to your exercise routine. It’s just a matter of getting back to basics and utilizing resources. Below are some tips to help keep your budget in check and keep you healthy and active.

  • Walking / Jogging: Get reacquainted with your local parks. A park is a wonderful place to walk or take a jog. You can also utilize local high school and college tracks to keep you in motion. Doing laps at the track is a great way to keep you on target with your distance goals.
  • Hiking: If you haven’t hiked for awhile, spring time is here and hiking is a great way to burn calories and enjoy beautiful scenery all at the same time. Start with a short hike and be sure to bring plenty of water and healthy snacks. When you return home from your hike, you may just feel like you were on a mini vacation with nature, and much more relaxed as a result.
  • Free weights: Grab a few light weight dumbbells and you can instantly create a quick circuit training routine right in your own living room. If you don’t have dumbbells, you can always use two bottled waters, two canned goods, etc. to get you started. Remember, less weight and more reps for smaller muscles, and heavier weight and fewer reps for larger muscles.
  • Fitness DVD’s: For close to the same cost as an individual exercise class, you can purchase a DVD that specializes in the exercise area of your choice. There are several excellent fitness DVD’s on the market and your budget will thank you for years to come.
  • Swimming: It may still be a little too cold for outdoor pools, but keep in mind that when the weather heats up a bit more, swimming is a great way to stay in shape. Many neighborhood communities have pools that you can use.
