Working from home is an option more people are considering with rising gas prices and time at a premium. While a home office, whether a satellite of a brick and mortar work environment or a small business, is appealing, this choice doesn’t suit everyone. Ask yourself these questions before you consider working from home.

  1. Are you an independent worker, or do you need the structure of officemates and an on-site boss? Despite the joys of working from home, some people don’t have personalities suited for it.
  2. How will you get social interaction? Even the most introverted people enjoy a little time with others. Find a way to get your interaction, whether it’s through on-site meetings or a monthly book club meeting?
  3. What kind of work will you do? Perhaps the work you do now is suitable to telecommuting, in which case you just need to convince your boss to allow you to take the plunge. For others, though, determining how you will make a living from home is key at this stage.
  4. Will your family cooperate? Everyone who works from home gets the occasional neighbor who thinks she can check the mail during vacation or the sister who wants to drop off the sick kids. Assess your immediately circle of family and friends, though, and determine whether they can treat your job seriously?
  5. Will you have an office? Some at-home workers use the dining room table, and that small spaced works fine. Others need to carve out a place in their home for a dedicated office. Decide where you can put your office space and how you’ll organize it before you begin.
  6. Is a home business permissible in your area? Some locations are stricter than others about working out of your home. Make sure your town will permit it before you begin planning.
  7. What are your goals? Having goals for your home business, whether it’s the number of visitors to your website or the amount of money you will earn, helps keep you focused and lets you know how you’re doing.

These questions are not the only ones you need to ask, but they are the most important as you beginning the planning portion of working from home. While the at-home work lifestyle looks appealing, it requires juggling and sacrifice that everyone isn’t ready to make.
