With wedding season just around the corner, you know that at least one of your friends is going to hit you up for a cake for a bridal shower, or if you’re really good with a pastry tube, the big day itself.

Gourmandise Desserts in Venice is offering a series of three courses starting Thursday that are the perfect brush-up on cake preparation and decorating, just in time for summer holidays and weddings.

I like Gourmandise Desserts’ web site. There is a Baking 101 page and other useful features for fans of baked desserts. In addition to classes on-site, the owner will arrange private, in-home baking classes. What a great graduation or birthday gift!

Cake baking includes everything from batter to filling to butter cream. Recipes you’ll prepare include vanilla-bean cake, chocolate decadence, Meyer lemon curd, passion fruit curd, whipped ganache, chocolate butter cream and Swiss butter cream

6-9 p.m., Thursday, May 21

Cost: $55

Cake decorating starts with a prepapred cake and delves into the details, such as piping technique. I should take this one. Cake decorating is beyond me.

6-9 p.m. Friday, May 22

Cost: $55

Wedding cake workshop is a 4-hour course for intermediate to professional students on the fine art of the wedding cake – by far the most nerve-wracking project you’ll ever take on.

10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 23

Cost: $85

To register, or for more information, visit the Gourmandise Desserts website.

Starting Thursday: Three days of savory baking.
