There’s no doubt that the 2009 Yamaha YZF-R1 is a good-looking sport bike, but how does it ride? Team Velocity Racing put theirs on the race track for the first time recently, and the team’s riders had a lot of positive feedback about the new liter bike.

Team Velocity Racing (TVR) is based in Augusta, Georgia, not too far from Atlanta, and they compete in the WERA National Endurance Series. Because of the endurance racing format, with races lasting up to six hours, they have a stable of riders who share the riding duties. Every time the bike comes in for a pit stop, the rider hops off and the next one climbs on.

After a six-hour race at Jennings GP in north Florida, the TVR racers had plenty to say about the ’09 R1. They all agreed that they need to get the setup (suspension, tire pressures, etc.) fine-tuned for racing, but they proved that the bike can be a winner: TVR snagged the Heavyweight Superstock class victory.

Here are the comments the TVR racers had about the ’09 R1:

Zac Chapman: “It’s a totally different machine than the ’08 R1. I have a lot of respect for it! The power delivery is different, but really fast and smooth; it almost felt like riding a V-twin, which is what I’m used to riding.”

James Vanderhaar: “I really liked it. The ’09 feels better, turns better, it seems to do everything better. The power delivery is amazingly smooth and really rideable.”

Brett Champagne: “The new bike is awesome. We just need to get it dialed in, and now we know what direction to go for the next race. I’m looking forward to having the R1 out there on the other tracks we race.”
