Over the weekend, Florida International basketball coach Isiah Thomas began the long and arduous process of rebuilding his reputation by landing 6-foot-8, 215-pound forward Dominique Ferguson.
The athletic Ferguson is considered a legitimate McDonald's All-American candidate and is currently ranked 16th in the class of 2010.
He had previously committed to play for Billy Gillispie at Kentucky but reopened his recruitment process after John Calipari took over the Wildcats. Arizona, Florida, Duke, Connecticut, Indiana and UCLA were supposedly also interested in recruiting Ferguson.
Beating out such high profile programs for a big time recruit is a big deal for Thomas, who was last seen running the New York Knickerbockers franchise straight into the ground.
But it's exactly Thomas' disaster of a tenure in New York City that caught Ferguson's attention.
"The main thing in my decision to come to FIU is Coach Thomas' past success in the NBA as a player and coach,'' Ferguson told The Miami Herald. "He knows what it takes to get to the next level and that's what I eventually want to do.''
Sure, as a player Zeke had what it took to win two NBA titles, but his tenure as a coach was an unmitigated disaster? To claim that Thomas achieved success during an NBA coaching career which produced a 187-223 record is a baffling conclusion, even for a high school student.
Ferguson, however, chooses to focus on the positive. "He (Thomas) has been in the league, has played in the league and has developed so many good players," Ferguson said.
No one is really sure which players the young forward is referring to, but you've got to admire his enthusiasm. After all, Ferguson is heading to a program that has only made the NCAA Tournament once and that was way back in the 90s.
Hey, at least he's playing for a stand-up coach like Isiah Thomas. What could go wrong?
