While a large portion of the population grows older, research is becoming increasingly geared toward reversing the aging process at a cellular level. Studies on physical activity reveal that resistance training reverses aging in human skeletal muscle. This study looked at mitochondria - the energy generating structures within cells which typically become less active with age - from samples of seniors participating in the study and discovered these structures generated almost as much energy as cells in people 20 to 30 years of age.
Even just a few hours a week can help seniors re-grow muscle and improve bone strength.
More research is being developed to look at the anti-aging effects of stamina building exercises like running and swimming.
