Faux leather journal made with Lutradur
created by Sue Bleiweiss

Artist Sue Bleiweiss uses mixed media to create books, boxes and journals.

When describing her work, Sue states:

"The questions "what if" or "how can I" are the ones that motivate me the most in the studio.   It's the exploration of finding and discovering new ways to manipulate and embellish paper and fabric that drive me into the studio and inspire me every day.

I rarely work in flat surfaces except during the initial design process, which for me is usually just a list of scribbled notes on a page in my notebook.  I enjoy working in 3D and creating sculptural objects, such as boxes or vases, or functional ones like journals and sketchbooks.  The challenge of taking a flat surface created with paper, fabric or a combination of both and giving it form to stand on its own is incredibly exciting to me.

My goal is not to create a perfect and flawless item.  It is to create a piece that excites the viewers eyes when they look at it, makes them wonder when they hold it in their hands and inspires their own imagination when they consider how it was created."

A selection of Sue's work is for sale in the gift shop at the Danforth Museum of Art in Framingham MA, and at the gift shop at the Fruitlands Museum in Harvard MA.   There are also several pieces on display in the Danforth Museum school's display case.
