Parenting is a dirty job. No seriously. Parenting can be a disgusting job especially if there is more than one child involved. In the first years of a child’s life, a parent must deal with vomit, feces, blood, and urine on top of cleaning up the messes their children create for fun. Food and drink will get into carpet. It is also a given that children will somehow find a way to get into crayons, markers, or anything else that was hidden away in a secure location. It is just a fact of life and will happen no matter how many steps are taken to prevent it.
With a special needs child, odds are depending on their diagnosis that the job can become exponentially messier. Some special needs kids vomit frequently on a regular basis. Some are in diapers for a longer period of time and have more leaks and toileting accidents. Also, some kids are on feeding tubes. For those who have no experience with tube feeds, it can get very messy. Oxiclean has been a life saver in many a household where a special needs child resides. Billy Mays may not be the inventor of Oxiclean, but he did make the product a household name.
The following are a couple of suggestions for cleaning disgusting messes using Oxiclean:
Disgusting messes on carpets (tube feed spills, vomit, toileting accidents):
First use a towel to absorb most of the liquid and chunks. Make a solution of 1 cup of water and ¼ cup of Oxiclean. Pour on the site and use a scrub brush. Use more solution if necessary. Let dry for about 3 to 4 hours. Then pour club soda over the mess and dry with a towel. Allow to dry. Then vacuum over treated area.
Nasty stains on clothing:
If the stain is super nasty, pre-treat the area. A good solution to use is again 1 cup of water to ¼ cup of Oxiclean. Pre-treat the area for at least an hour. Then wash with detergent as usual but adding ½ cup of Oxiclean to the washer. This is more appropriate for the clothes that have stains from leaky diapers or severe vomiting.
For normal stains, go ahead and just add ½ cup of Oxiclean to the washer. This is great for clothing stained by reflux and minor messes.
