Just south enough not to be too Hollywood chic, but close enough to the action for a look at the “stars” in LaLa land if you must, Orange County and specifically what is known as “The Oceanfront” is a prime vacation destination if your heading to the west coast.
What is known as The Oceanfront actually comprises one of Southern California’s most exclusive beach communities where work and play intermingle with sun and fun. From spas, to shopping, to world class golf to amazing gourmet restaurants and top-notch accommodations, the Oceanfront area consists of Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Dana Point and Laguna Beach.
In fact, this area is 42-miles of uninterrupted coast line with white, sandy beaches and towering cliffs lording over the pounding surf below. You can find cultural events aside surf contests and juicy hamburgers served next to five-star meals.
Shopping at one of the four large shopping malls is a must, but Fashion Island or South Coast Plaza are the two that will really make you smile. It is here that dogs shop with owners and each mall goers are on display just waiting to be “discovered.”
There is also golfing in this coastal community area at either Monarch Beach Golf Links or the Pelican Hill Golf Club. Not a golfer, no need to worry as there is an array of additional outdoor and cultural activities.
Each beach community town also has its own vibe, so enjoy all four to get an idea of the differences. In Newport Beach, home of the world-famous jazz festival, residents attend Manolo Blahnik trunk shows at Neiman Marcus and dine a la fresco among the overabundant bougainvillea. Visit Crystal Cove, a secluded beach and, don’t forget John Wayne once lived here as well.
In Laguna Beach you will find seven miles of shoreline that speaks to the outdoor lover, art lover or history buff. The town has over 100 art galleries and artist’s studios and the Laguna Art Museum is a must-stop. A rich history in this town, it is both vibrant, yet California when you find the inner beauty of the place.
Looking for the quintessential old-style Hollywood beach town then look no further than Huntington Beach. Known for its big waves, beach sports and laid back attitude, Huntington Beach hosts many outdoor tournaments from beach volleyball to surf contests. There is also an excellent pier to visit for a quiet walk and the pubs and clubs will definitely call your name in the evening.
One of the most quaint and romantic of the four communities is Dana Point. Rolling foothills and amazing coastal views will take your breath away and it’s here you can go whale watching, deep sea fishing or even windsurfing. The Ocean Institute is in Dana Point and the Dana Point Harbor House is home to over 2,500 yachts from around the world.
Indeed, there is something for the most active lifestyle to the laid back vacationer looking for some time in the sun and surf. The Oceanfront definitely offers all that it promises and the bonus, it’s just a short drive to LA should you get too relaxed during your vacation.
