Brewers 2010 schedule opens at home
It’s not unique that the Brewers' 2010 schedule was released today — Major League Baseball put out the schedules for all 30 teams today.
For about eight of those teams and their fan bases, this is hardly a story to talk about. For the Brewers and their fans, who are deep under the pile of teams that will not make the 2009 playoffs, it might signify it’s time to say “wait ’till next year.”
There are plenty of reasons to stay tuned — where will Prince Fielder finished in the MVP voting, will Fielder, Ryan Braun or Casey McGehee make a run at the Hank Aaron award, does McGehee have a chance at NL Rookie of the Year, plus interesting pitching match-ups between non-contenders, like tonight’s Gallardo vs. Zambrano card — but now the slate is set.
Here are some interesting series:
- The Crew opens at home against the Rockies and the Cards. The extended Brewers fan base seems to care whether their home Opening Day — for years the single bright spot through 16 summers of dismal baseball — is the “true” opening day. This year, the unrest that the Brewers started their season in a misty San Francisco was barely surpassed by the frustration that Jeff Suppan was the starting pitcher.
- Then comes a trip to Chicago, Washington and Pittsburgh. In April. The over-under on rainouts for those nine games is 2.
- They get the Cubs again at Miller Park before April’s end.
- The San Diego-Los Angeles road trip is early this year, instead of in August like the last few years.
- The Interleague games are tough, but when aren’t they for this National League team. The Rangers, The Angels, the twin series with the Twins and the Mariners, for whom Jack Zduriencik, who helped construct the core of the Brewers team, is now general manager.
- The Brewers see Philadelphia, St. Louis and Chicago in September again next year, albeit a few weeks earlier. The final push is Cincinnati, Florida, New York and Cincinnati.
