The Eastern bloc workhouse Trabant has had a long life, albeit not well known here in the West. It is reincarnated as an electric car.
The gist is that ironically enough, the Trabant originally was a two stroke internal combustion engine, ICE, a highly polluting car for its size. Being reintroduced as an electric vehicle, EV just proves to show how far we have come in such a short time with the electric drive.
Electric Trabant. Due to a rebirth in the retro-chic taste of a forgotten old Eastern bloc brands, the Trabant is coming back to life, this time in a more environmentally friendlier version. With a top speed of 70 miles an hour and a range of 150 miles on a charge, the Trabant nT is a bare bone, little necessity with no unnecessary gadgetry EV, true to its origin. The best part is that it should cost about 20,000 euros, or about $29,000.
Does anybody see a string of events here? Let us recap a little bit here. We have a car industry that is having a full episode of schizophrenia. On the one hand, you have those that are resoundingly turned to the future with intriguing prototypes and appealing concepts, such as Nissan's Leaf and the eventual Toyota electric iQ. On the other hand, you not only have different fingers but you also have those who are embracing the retro chic look, such as Honda and their cute as a button EV-N as well as the above mentioned electric Trabant.
This shows clearly that the auto industry desperately wants to move on, either by embracing its retro past with a touch of futurism or full on advanced designs that make consumers dream again. When an old polluting and highly inefficient car such as the Trabant (yes, I know they were raced!) comes back as an electric car, you know the industry has turned a page.
