How to properly add lime to your Corona

Happy Cinco de Mayo! It’s May 5th, the day that Mexico celebrates when its native troops conquered the opposing large French Army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. May 5 also honors Mexican culture and has become a fun day for citizens of the US to partake in as well.

Some like those knock-you-off-your-feet Margaritas, some like their fruit-filled Sangria, others enjoy drinking tequila straight or mixed into an array of other amazing cocktails. But sometimes it’s nice to kick back with a bottle of Corona and a nice bright green, juicy lime slice. A lime can be submerged in the Corona to add a little extra kick, or as tradition would have it to keep bugs away from the beverage.

Now, we have all seen it, at bars, at barbecues, at a house party. When the Coronas and limes make their appearance, someone inevitably takes their bottle, tries to sink their lime and manages to spray innocent passerby. It’s embarrassing, uncomfortable and something every adult Corona-drinker should know how to do properly!

After thoroughly washing your lime (we've all heard the scary stories about pesticides, unhealthy fingers at the bar, etc.), cut pieces the appropriate size to fit into the bottle neck. No one likes having to jam it down or a piece that is too teeny! Push the lime slice through the neck of the bottle. Stick your thumb over the top of the bottle and put your thumb a half inch into it. Slowly turn the bottle upside down and watch the lime float to the bottom of the bottle. Keep the pressure in the bottle by keeping your thumb in the hole as you slowly turn the bottle right side up. Remove your thumb very very slowly as to not release the pressure too fast and cause any unwanted explosion. And waaah-lahh! Hopefully you aren’t covered in Corona and you can enjoy your beer while listening to some Mariachi and enjoying an empanada and guacamole! Cheers!
