As Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s confirmation hearing began today, l, like many Americans watched and listened to the openings. There is no question that Judge Sotomayor has the intelligence, poise and experience to handle what will undoubtedly be tough questioning—especially from her critics. As I listened to Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, I wondered how Judge Sotomayor felt (not what she thought, but what she felt) when he spoke to her in a didactic manner, and went on to say, that her nomination was all but certain… “barring a meltdown.”
I cannot imagine, nor I would guess could any of you, how tough it must be to prepare—both mentally and emotionally— for these hearings. And yet, I doubt Sotomayor will be surprised by any of the questions.
As we prepare for job interviews we too should not be surprised by any of the questions asked. Most interviewers follow “the script”—asking the top 10 interview questions”. It is unlikely that they will toss you a curve ball. Yet, shouldn’t we prepare to handle the curve ball, even if it doesn’t come our way? I think so.
What do you think?
There are many reasons to continue watching the confirmation hearings. One of the reasons I will be watching is to see what I can learn about how to handle the really tough interview questions.
