LAIDE: How well do you think the worlds of fashion and design get along?
BRM/TR: Well, they certainly share the same passions, the same eye for beauty.
LAIDE: What is it that allows iconic designers such as Ralph Lauren, Kate Spade and Calvin Klein to transmute their visions for a great dress to one of dressing a room?
BRM/TR: The luminaries that you mentioned have produced the most recognizable styles in fashion, yet they are still creating—wardrobe collections as well as furnishings. Both fashion and décor require taste to be appreciated, whether it is a dress or a duvet.
LAIDE: What interior design styles appeal to you?
BRM/TR: I like a clean, modern look—not too stark or “contemporary”—with bright, beachy colors. Sort of a Hampton Beach meets Pottery Barn mix.
LAIDE: So lots of ticking stripe and twill, chunky herringbone in ivory—and wicker?
BRM/TR: Sure, but with panache! Ralph Lauren offers an outstanding oeuvre of Hampton Beach-style coordinates, with panels of bright, bold colors: paisley, ribbon stripes and an unbelievably beautiful fabric called “Pink Canvas.” You have to see it!

LAIDE: Tell me about what you do at TAPIS ROUGE.
BRM/TR: We are all about putting the whole package together with the right fit, colors, textures and cut for each client. My business partner, Chandra O’Ree, says that fashion conveys our attitude toward the world—you know, like when one is strutting down the avenue in whiskered denim: it tells a story. So it is about more than beauty; it has to do with discovering what empowers you and gives you a sense of joie de vivre. For me, it goes hand-in-hand with a feeling of confidence—one that comes naturally.
LAIDE: What are the looks that you find for your clients?
BRM/TR: For personal shopping, we rely on high-end outlets that deal exclusively with us, so we have access to the most up-to-the-minute collections. I love everything from DVF—Diane von Furstenberg’s latest brand. Foley + Corinna is an absolute favorite. Marc Jacobs too—he is out there. And Chanel—breathtaking!—her work is absolutely timeless. At this moment, I carry a Chanel wallet that my mother gave to me; many have offered beaucoup bucks for it, but I will never let it go.
LAIDE: Do you work with celebrities?
BRM/TR: Oh, yes. All the time, but we never drop names.
LAIDE: Not even for the press?
BRM/TR: Never! (laughs)
LAIDE: Any final thoughts on fashion?
BRM/TR: We have an MTV mindset at TAPIS ROUGE: trends change with the temperature, and we have the knowledge to shake things up when the fashion atmosphere feels stodgy. It takes courage to stay close to the cutting edge.
