Employment planning for your future

In business, as in life, the rule of thumb is this - if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. As trite as that statement might sound, it brings to light one of the biggest mistakes made by those most in need of quick and gainful employment - the failure to make a plan for their success. Either they are too business, too sure that the job search won’t be too long, or too apathetic about themselves to care. By a plan, I mean a written (computer typed) plan that you can print and hang on your wall. Can you get a job without a plan? Sure you can, however a plan does several things.

1. It builds your self-esteem. With a plan, you    know that you are doing SOMETHING to work on your success.

2. It gives you a map and directions to follow. You can see how you are going to get from (A) your job search to (Z) the job. On this map you would include your vocational training, your meetings with the career counselors, your revision of your resumes, your networking, your interviews, and all the other things you do that will lead you to employment.

3. It fine-tunes the things you are doing. With a written plan, you can see the things that are working (and keep doing them), you can see the things that are not working (and change them).

4. It distracts and deters distractions. Without a plan, you are kinda blowing in the wind. Wherever the winds blows, that is where you go. Since their perception of you is that you are NOT WORKING, you are open to every baby sitting job needed, you are susceptible to every time someone has the cable/utility/phone guy coming to their house and needs someone to be there, and you are prone to every request to please pick them up from the wherever because they don’t feel like getting on the bus. With a plan, you must do one of two things - either turn down their requests (if it conflicts with your plan) or include their requests into your plan.

5. It allows others to be able to realistically and informatively help you in your career/job search. With a plan, you have given them the insight to see where and how they are able to help you.

6. It brings organization to your efforts. Instead of going all willy-nilly into your job search, you can go step by step into a well designed and strategic plan of action. You will no longer have to ask yourself, “did I call that person?” Or “did I send that resume?” Because it would have been noted in your plan.

Life is tough. Why make it tougher? A well thought out, well crafted plan helps to reduce the uncertainty from your job search. Thus making life a little less tough. And isn’t that a good and wonderful thing?
