"The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" - a guide for jobseekers too! (part 2)

When you are on an interview, is it all about you? How much money you need to pay the bills, the hours you need to work, the days off you need, the vacation days you need. Even if you do not speak about your needs during the interview, are they still very prevalent in your mind, in your head, in your thoughts?

Might I suggest that you try Habit 6 of “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen R. Covey.  Last time we spoke, I mentioned that I grew up reading business and success books such as Mr. Covey's. I was very much into business then and now. However, what better way to prepare for obtaining your dream job than to read from the lips of the masters. Remember - the Art of the JobSearch is all about the Business of Success. I told you how my mindset changed upon reading the first Habit and with it my success ratio.

Well, Habit #6 ain't too shabby either. Check this out:

Principles of Creative Cooperation: A way of working in teams. Apply effective problem solving. Apply collaborative decision making. Value differences. Build on divergent strengths. Leverage creative collaboration. Embrace and leverage innovation. It is put forth that when synergy is pursued as a habit, the result of the teamwork will exceed the sum of what each of the members could have achieved on their own. "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts." –courtesy Wikipedia.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. – What this means to me is this – we must all work as a team and no member of the team is more or less important than another member. A fully functioning team delegates responsibilities based on who is best suited for the job entailed. During your interview, make sure that the interviewer completely understands the strengths and experiences you bring to the company. Show them how your spirit of teamwork and camaraderie has helped your previous employers thrive and succeed.


Creative Cooperation – finding ways to make it work. My 4 year old grandson was explaining to me how to “improvise” – if one crayon doesn’t work, find a way to still color the picture. We can’t all just get along all the time. It is seldom that easy. However, if you adopt the concept of creative cooperation, you will use your talents and resources to mesh with the other members of the team, and encourage them to do likewise. On the interview, embrace the interviewer not as an adversary but as a member of the team trying to bring success to the particular company. How can you make it work between the two of you to get you on board and helping the company’s success?


And by all means, during the interview, liberally quote Stephen Covey (and give him credit). Those in the know will be impressed. Those who don’t know of the book will be awestruck.

Successful people make life happen for them; they don't let life happen to them!
