This weekend residents and visitors alike will have a chance to explore 18 city neighborhoods around the District of Columbia such as H Street NE, Anacostia, and the Capitol Riverfront, alongside better-known areas such as Georgetown, U Street, and Embassy Row.
On September 19 and 20, professional guides, prominent community leaders, and neighborhood residents lead 120 free walking tours. From local history to parks and gardens, new development to notable architecture, there is a tour topic for everyone.

WHAT TO SEE:

  • Hillcrest & “East Washington Heights” (Saturday, 2 pm) highlights the grand boulevards, stately homes, and sprawling parkland in this east-of-the-river neighborhood. Stops include private gardens and a newly-renovated “green” home that features the latest geothermal and solar technologies.
  • Historic Garden Tour at Tudor Place (Saturday, 11 am) takes walkers through 200 years of history. Robert E. Lee, Andrew Jackson, and General Lafayette have passed through these gardens, which include an English knot garden and a collection of trees planted by Martha Washington’s grandchildren.
  • The birthplace of chemical warfare during World War I is evident on the Spring Valley: World War I Munitions tour (Sunday, 1:30 – 3 pm). The American University Experiment Station hosted more than 1,200 scientists for development and testing of toxic chemicals, deadly munitions, and powerful explosives; the 16-year site cleanup in Spring Valley continues today.
  • Capital Sites @ Nite (Saturday, 5 – 8 pm) invites bikers to continue exploring as the sun goes down and “bike the sites” of the National Mall and Capitol Hill for fascinating stories and incredible views.

The WalkingTown, DC schedule is available complete with meeting places, times, and tour lengths at www.WalkingTownDC.org. Participants can browse the online schedule, pick their favorites, and simply join the group at the specified time and place. Bike tours and some walking tours do require advance reservations.
