October 23, 2009, Marshfield, VT - Nutritionists and other health care personnel are concerned about the impact of electromagnetic radiation on health and disease as well as the impact of whole foods and balanced diets. It's not only food that impacts daily health, but also the environment.
The EMR Policy Institute is sponsoring a scientific conference on Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) Impacts on Human Health. The one-day event will be held at the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO on Sunday, November 8, 2009 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The emphasis will be on results of studies of what scientists know about the effects of wireless technologies on humans, animals, and nature. How should Congress change federal exposure standards to make wireless products and electromagnetic technology safer for all family members?
Samuel Milham, MD, recipient of the prestigious Ramazzini prize, and a pioneer in health impacts of electromagnetic fields will give the keynote address on “Electrification’s Tragic Legacy” and the epidemic of 20th century diseases including cancer, neurological diseases and cardiovascular disease.
Global exposures to electromagnetic radiation have increased exponentially in the last several decades and may pose serious public health consequences. The scientific evidence will be presented by Gary Olhoeft, PhD, Colorado School of Mines, Frank Barnes, PhD, University of Colorado, Magda Havas, PhD, Trent University, Canada and Jerry Phillips, PhD, University of Colorado.
Scientific studies have linked increased childhood and adult cancers, including leukemia and brain cancers to cell phone use, and power line electromagnetic fields. Increased rates of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and ALS, and miscarriage and infertility are all reported to be influenced by exposures to EMR at levels now common in daily life.
The global explosion of wireless technologies in particular has created a direct disconnect between existing and obsolete safety standards on one hand, and substantial scientific evidence pointing to grave health consequences at levels more than a thousand times lower. The long latency period for development of cancers, particularly for brain cancers means that failure to take immediate action to reduce exposures may result in hundreds of thousands of preventable deaths worldwide.
Cindy Sage, Co-Editor of the BioInitiative Report will discuss why new, biologically based public exposure standards for chronic exposure to low-intensity exposures are warranted now. Existing safety standards are obsolete because they are based solely on thermal effects from acute exposures, and have no protective value against chronic, low-intensity exposures from emerging wireless technologies from applications including mobile phones, cordless phones, DECT phones, WI-FI, WLAN,WiMAX, wireless internet, and baby monitors, among other sources.
The evidence is clearly strong enough today to take action to reduce EMR exposures, especially for pregnant women and for children as other countries of the world are rapidly implementing in response to this body of evidence.
