Finally, a chic fashion week for curvy women! At long last, the fashion industry has figured out that the typical American woman is not 5’11” tall with a weight of 117 lbs. Real American women have curves and they would like to dress nicely, too. We are in the final days leading up to the very first ever Full Figured Fashion Week in New York City, to be held June 25-27. The show, by DeVoe Signature Events, has nearly 3 dozen sponsors including lead sponsor Ashley Stewart.

According to FFFWeek.com, the folks who put the show together, there are more than 40 million women in the United States over size 14. And collectively, they spend a cool $25 billion a year for clothes. That represents 25% of all clothing sales in the country.

According to government data, more than 60% of American adults are either overweight or obese. Since all these people need to wear clothes, too, it’s kind of amazing that the clothing industry has largely ignored this segment of the population.

Clothes designed for rail thin models cannot just be “made larger” because the dimensions don’t stay the same. That’s why things that look so striking on the runway often look ridiculous when worn by normal women.

There is a full schedule of events for Full Figured Fashion Week, and organizers expect quite a turnout. And curvy women (and their partners) across America are excited to see what beautiful clothes come out of the show. Since beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, beautiful clothes should be available for everybody.

Designers should note, though, that there are 50 million or so big men out there who would also like to have clothes designed for their body shapes, too. They will probably not ever spend as much money on clothes as their ladies, but they would buy a whole lot more if there were better looking clothes to choose from.

Health is the most important thing, and mental health is a big part of that. Many of us are big, and we know that. But, regardless of size or weight, self esteem depends upon our ability to look our best. From our hair to our shoes, and everything in between, we still want to look nice. As the old saying goes, “do your best with what you’ve got!”
