Over the past couple of weeks there were an abundant number of patients coming in for treatment and relief from sciatic pain. Sciatica is famous for causing loss of work. Loss of sleep and a lot of pain and suffering. Hopefully these tips will help you relieve some of the pain and help you prevent sciatic pain in the future.

The sciatic nerve is a long nerve that starts in the lower back and travels through the buttocks and down  the legs. When the nerve is irritated from either a disc herniation or constriction from the muscles it passes through it's called sciatica.

The symptoms of sciatica can be debilitating and severe. Fortunately, many times sciatic pain can be achieved with non surgical treatments. If sciatica is caused by a disc herniation it can be a more complicated case and take longer to manage. If sciatica is caused by tight musculature of the piriformis muscle it can produce the same painful symtpoms of sciatica but has a different name. Piriformis syndrome.  There are many treatment options for sciatic pain and the results may vary from person to person. Some patients do well with pain killers and muscle relaxers, while others have no benefit at all. Epidural injection provide the same results and back surgery is a 50/50 chance at best. There is nothing to lose by trying less invasive treatments to resolve the pain.

To prevent disc protrusion make sure to always lift objects by bending at the knees and not at the waist. NEVER lift something and twist at the same time!

Making sure the sciatic nerve doesn't get irritated by the piriformis can save you a lot of agony.

A great way to stretch the piriformis is illustrated in the image and should be done to prevent and relieve sciatic pain. If you are able to move into this position then stretch the piriformis as much as possible.
