Today’s column, by Derrick Z. Jackson “NRA's ill wind blows through the Windy City”, published in the rapidly declining Boston Globe doesn’t quite live up to his reputation. I’ve taken him to task before and yet even sending him an e-mail with a link to my column has yielded no reply. Should I have expected something different from someone who cannot defend his position with any semblance of logic? Someone who uses the Brady Campaign “talking points” to further spread their lies and deceit? Someone who would rather use false premises as a basis for their tired rhetoric instead of the truth? I suppose not.
As before, in his prior column, he’s upset about our individual States being able to determine whether their own law-abiding citizens will be able to defend themselves in our National Parks within their very own borders. After all, what could possibly go wrong?
“PRESIDENT OBAMA really must say something about guns now, less he fecklessly watch the National Rifle Association take over his beloved Chicago.”
“As we all know, the NRA wants one single, applicable rule of guns anywhere, anytime.”
Who is the NRA? The National Rifle Association has existed since 1871 and in short is comprised of United States Citizens who believe that the Founding Fathers minced no words, pulled no punches, when they finally agreed, after much debate, upon the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, for which they wrote in clearly understandable English:
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
In 1983, then President Ronald Regan, after having an attempt made on his own life, had this to say about the NRA and its members (Americans):
“You know, I've always felt a special bond with the members of your group. You live by Lincoln's words, ``Important principles may and must be inflexible.'' Your philosophy put its trust in people. So, you insist on individuals being held responsible for their actions. The NRA believes that America's laws were made to be obeyed and that our constitutional liberties are just as important today as 200 years ago.”
From Mr. Jackson’s editorial you’d think then that the NRA was some kind of anti-American terrorist organization like Al-Qaeda looking to take over Chicago. Wrong. Just ordinary American’s standing up for our country and our Constitution. Something that Mr. Jackson would have you believe is not a worthy cause. Something that Mr. Jackson would have us “compromise” on. I say again, compromise on our most basic principles? I should think not.
Like President Lincoln and our Founding Father we believe that indeed some “Important principles may and must be inflexible.” That means our Constitution and our Bill of Rights Mr. Jackson including the First Amendment which protects your column from censorship. An Amendment, I dare say, that protects his right to say the following:
“Throughout the presidential campaign, he said he was confident America could find common ground between rural family traditions of hunting and children being hunted down and slaughtered on city streets. He often referred to specific numbers of Chicago public school children being killed.”
I thought Chicago already has a handgun ban (even in private homes), Mr. Jackson, so how could the children possibly be being “hunted down and slaughtered” on the streets of Chicago? You see, Mr. Jackson, the real common sense about gun control is that it fails because only the law-abiding obey the law.
Mr. Jackson then blatantly misspeaks the truth by stating:
“Since Obama has been president, the NRA has been getting what it wants, no regulations and a censoring of reasonable, thoughtful debate.”
Apparently Mr. Jackson, with all his education, doesn’t yet understand that our Constitution requires the passage of a new law to be debated and passed by Congress before it can become – a law. Apparently when you lose the debate, the losers are allowed to claim that as “censorship”, but silly me I guess that only happens in totalitarian regimes.
Rumor is, that Mr. Jackson served as a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts. “Be prepared.”, right? Trustworthy, honest, right? I would really hate to have had my son in his Boy Scout troop since he apparently cannot speak the truth, nor is he aware of our fundamental constitutional rights.
So, that’s what Mr. Jackson’s column, excuse me, “hot air” is all about. Perhaps a more appropriate summary of his column could really be put this way:
“Mr. President, unless you do something drastic (bypass Congress, end all debate) and fast, We the People, and the United States Supreme Court might just uphold the United States Constitution and there won’t be anything we’ll be able to do about it.”
Will Obama listen? Thankfully, I doubt it, because if President Obama heeds his idols (Lincoln) words he'll do nothing of the sort.
Meanwhile closer to home, Boston Police Superintendent, Daniel Linskey, delivered a clear message in person, what I hope is not an idle warning to nearly 50 gang members over the weekend. I applaud the attempt, but just like Mr. Jackson’s hero President Obama, negotiating with your enemy (Iran, North Korea) I have little hope that it will do any real good. Notice, Mr. Jackson, there wasn’t one law-abiding firearm owner in the bunch?
Oh, and lest I forget, if the Boston Globe wants to save some money in an effort to buy some time before it’s inevitable bankruptcy, stop paying Mr. Jackson for columns like this one and instead invest in some facts.
