How do you know if a homebased business is right for you?  We all know the practical reasons why people decide to start homebased business: job loss, want to set your own hours, want to be home more with your kids, need an extra income.  You have your reasons for desiring to start a business from home,  but how do you know if this option is right for you?

1. You can not find a career that fits your unique blend of skills, talents and passions.

One great example of this comes to mind, Cesar Millan, also know as, The Dog Whisperer.   Cesar Millan has a unique skill and talent to rehabilitate troubled dogs.  He has been able to do this so successfully, that he has his own Dog Psychology Center and TV show.  He may not have found a job with a company that shared his philosophy of dog training.  Therefore, he created his ideal career through his business.

2. The flexibility you require in your family life would be unreasonable to ask of an employer.

You may be in a situation in which you need to work the type of hours that wouldn't fit the needs of people looking to hire you.  For instance, maybe you can only work evenings and weekends.  Well, if the jobs that fit your skills can only be worked during the week from 9am to 5pm, an employer wouldn't be able to hire you no matter how talented you might be.

3. You want to be working on dream rather than someone else's.

Think about it.  The company you are currently or considering working for started as an idea first.  It was someone else's dream for how they could change the world and provide for their family.    They needed people (you and others like you) to see that dream fulfilled.   Over time more and more people come to help build the business - the idea, the dream.  Maybe it's time for you to begin working towards the idea that you have in your heart.

4. You will stear clear of the hype and take the time to build a profitable business.

What is your motivation for wanting to start a business?  What is your plan? If your motives for starting a business are not clear in your own mind and you don't have a written down plan of how you will get there, you will be tossed around by every good idea that comes along.  Knowing who you are in business keeps you from buying in to all the hype of the newest and best thing.  It will probably take years to grow a business to be successful enough to support you and your family.  Be prepared to make wise, educated, conscious decisions about what fits your business.  Leave the hype behind.

5. You have an idea that could change the lives of those who use your product.

If you are not going into business to meet a need or to solve a problem, you will be wasting your time.  People only want what you have to offer, if it benefits them in some way.

After evaluating each of the 5 reasons for starting a homebased business let me know your thoughts in the comments below.  Did the reasons above make you reconsider your decision to start a business?  Do you have an additional reason that I may have overlooked?  Please, leave me a comment below and let me know of any homebased businesses you are currently interested in that you would want to know more about.
