He may be a Republican, and he may be anti-abortion, but Louisiana Representative Joseph Cao stood alone among the Republicans and did the right thing for those who elected him in Louisiana, in an area that has one of the highest rates of poverty in the nation: He was the lone Republican to vote for the healthcare reform bill in the House.
Said Cao, “I have always said that I would put aside partisan wrangling to do the business of the people. My vote tonight was based on my priority of doing what is best for my constituents.”
As reported by the Huffington Post, “In the past, Cao has been touted by House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) as ‘the future’ of the GOP. Republicans clearly went the distance to keep him in the fold for the health care vote. House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.), who promised protesters at a Tea Party rally this week that ‘not one Republican will vote for this bill,’ was standing beside Cao as the historic vote unfolded.”
As far as Cao being “the future of the GOP” . . . after tonight, having made a liar out of Eric Cantor, I’m guessing not so much. Republicans, as we know, have no room in the tent for anyone who doesn’t toe the Party line – they don’t like “right,” they only like Right. After all, Representative Joe Wilson became a right-wing hero after yelling, “You lie!” at the President in September. This vote by Cao no doubt makes him worse than a RINO in the Republicans’ eyes – he’ll join the ranks of Colin Powell and others who’ve broken rank to do the right thing and have been castigated by the right.
Listen, Cao – if the Republicans cast you out, there’s always room in the Democratic tent for you.
