President Obama has narrowed down to six his possible choices to replace retiring Justice David Souter on the Supreme Court.
Among those named is Carlos Moreno, associate justice of the California Supreme Court.
Moreno was born in 1948 in Los Angeles, and he is married, with two kids.
He is a graduate of Stanford and Yale, and was sworn in at the state Supreme Court in 2001 after being named by Gov. Gray Davis.
His legal career began in his home town, where he was a city attorney prosecuting criminal and consumer protection cases, then became special counsel, working on political and legislative issues.
He became a commercial litigator at Mori & Ota, winning an appointment from Gov. George Deukmejian in 1986 to the Municipal Court, Compton Judicial District.
In 1993, Gov. Pete Wilson brought him to Los Angeles County Superior Court, where he handled felony trials in downtown Los Angeles. President Clinton then named him to the United States District Court.
Also being considered by Obama are Solicitor General Elena Kagan, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, and U.S. Appeals Court judges Sonia Sotomayor and Diane Pamela Wood.
