Los Angeles Unified School District lawyers went back to court Thursday to try to block the teachers union from participating in protests Friday, saying the activities would violate the district's restraining order, but the judge said an order was not necessary.

A Superior Court judge on Tuesday had issued the order against the United Teachers Los Angeles, blocking plans for a one-day walkout by members to protest proposed layoffs.

Union officials agreed to the order, but then organized before- and after-school rallies. Union officials have also warned that they will hold an "act of civil disobedience" Friday at district headquarters around 10 a.m.

Despite the court order, more than a thousand teachers have requested substitutes for Friday, officials said.
