One of my Internet sources perceives the mass-murder at Fort Hood as jihad, and the authorities as pursuing political correctness in denying it and as withholding confirming evidence. The source claimed that the authorities did not identify the gunman as a Muslim.
Not true of the NY Times and Wall St. Journal of 11/6. They related all the facts they could gather, without withholding anything.
The accounts suffer from the usual problems of same-day and next-day reporting. Thus there were errors or contradictions, unresolved if even noticed. That is why I disapprove of people’s general desire to get news immediately. It is not as if they must make weighty decisions or any decisions based on such news. And if they must, better to get the facts straight first.
My New York newspapers did not raise the question, as did my Internet source, whether the attack was jihad. There is some evidence to suppose it is, but I think a conclusion now would be premature. Let us wait and be sure, then rush and err. It would be like the Goldstone UN report reaching its conclusions before investigating, even before setting out.
There have been instances of Muslims attacking fellow U.S. troops. The military should consider that a problem to figuring out a solution for.
I don’t know about jihad in Texas, but it is in New York – click here
