Through intermediaries, China is selling Iran up to 40,000 barrel of gasoline a day. This may end any ability to impose stiff enough sanctions on Iran to halt its nuclear weapons development (www.imra.org.il, 9/25).
U.S. foreign policy is unrealistic, naïve, hasty, and ignorant of local issues and mores. It wages some wars needlessly and needs other wars it does not fight. It gets into some out of emotion and some via conspiracy. It may quit when about to win, suffering all the losses of war and gaining none of the goals. As it learns to fight with fewer casualties, its tolerance for casualties goes down even faster.
On the other hand, I think that the U.S. is learning that its resources are limited -- its politicians prefer wasting them on domestic lobbies. Its military has quietly but effectively assisted foreign countries fight jihadist insurgencies. Will it evaluate such efforts rationally, or let politics cloud the issues?
