Teen Reads Week came to an end yesterday, but it's not too late to catch up on the latest and greatest in young adult (YA) fiction. Although some people might write off YA fiction as fluffy or poorly written, in this author's opinion, some of the YA titles are even better than the ones marketed toward older women. Here are a few great YA series to try out:
Confessions of Georgia Nicolson by Louise Rennison: With titles like "Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging" and "Knocked out by my Nunga Nungas," this series delivers cheeky British fun with the tales of over-the-top teenager Georgia Nicolson and her friends. The books have tons of laugh out loud moments ... in fact, you might not want to read these books in public or people will stare at you (personal experience). The last installment of the series, "Are "Those My Basoomas I See Before Me?" was just released this month.
The Gossip Girl Series by Cecily von Ziegesar : If you watch the TV show on the CW, the books are a must read. Although there are some differences in the characters and plots (Vanessa has a shaved head!), the Gossip Girl books have the same general feel as the show does and make for some highly entertaining reading.
The Luxe Series by Anna Godbersen: Take Gossip Girl and move it to the 1800s and you have The Luxe. The series follows a group of wealthy young people through the balls and teas of high society New York City, and the novels are full of scandals, secret romances and even murder. Splendor, the fourth and final book of the series, will be released this Tuesday, October 27.
The Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer: If you're one of the few who haven't read the saga of Bella, Edward and Jacob yet, now is the time to catch up before New Moon hits the big screen next month. Even if you're not into the whole vampires and werewolves thing, the story will get you hooked from page one of Twilight. The soundtrack to New Moon, which is currently at #1 on the charts, also makes for great background music while reading.
