D.C. music lovers, consider yourself fortunate to have one of the nation’s top-selling, highest-ranking venues right in your neighborhood. Located on the corner of 9th and V streets NW, 9:30 Club is precisely that for the simplest of reasons.
With its two levels, 9:30 Club has enough floor space for moshers and dancers, and certainly enough balcony space for spectators. In fact, perhaps its greatest luxury is its 1,200-person capacity – bigger than your favorite hole in the wall, but still more intimate than any amphitheatre.
Everything else about 9:30 Club is rather basic. The walls are painted black, the lights remain low, and pretty much everyone has to stand close, save for the patrons who arrive early enough for a balcony bar seat.
All of this seems to pay homage to its grittier new wave and punk rock roots, which developed at its original location on 930 F St. NW. But ever since concert promoter (and owner) I.M.P. relocated the venue, then celebrated its 1996 opening with a Smashing Pumpkins performance, 9:30 Club has garnered acts both mainstream and obscure.
Such a pulse on the music industry has resulted in record ticket sales and much recognition. In 2007, Billboard’s “Top Club” generated the most ticket sales of any in the nation. Additionally, 9:30 Club remains Pollstar’s “Nightclub of the Year,” as it was deemed in 2008. But with a setting and lineup this versatile, its mainstay presence in the D.C. music scene should be top-ranked for years to come.
