I remember in the 90's how dated the fashion of the previous decade had seemed. Stone washed denim, high-waist pants, Michael Jackson Thriller style jackets, gold chains, and loud colors dominated the 80's but have silently resurfaced. I was born in the eighties so it's instinctual that I embrace the style. Fashion has a tendency to repeat and recycle itself as it inevitably evolves. That is why designers are infusing many of those throwback looks into their collections while outlets are lining up to carry them. I recently visited a Gap store and saw several colored jeans with the acid wash and cut of the 80's that were on sale for only $24.99. I'm talking about salmon color, turquoise, grey, and aqua denim that were fitted at the ankle and had a high waist. My first impression was disbelief that jeans with such a dated look would be sold at a major chain in 2009. However, after looking over the jeans and even trying them on, I quickly realized how good they looked and how brilliant the idea to re-introduce this look to the masses. Seriously, I was yearning for 1988 just at the sight of them.
Many artists and musicians have even adopted the look into their image. Singers Santogold, M.I.A, and Keri Hilson are known for sporting high-waist "mom" jeans while adding their own flavor that pays homage to the eighties but stays fresh for the present. For those of you who would like to incorporate fashionable items from the 80's into your own wardrobe without looking like you stepped out of a time machine, simply choose a few pieces to compliment your recent clothes and style. For example, a night out on the town can call for a leather "Thriller" style jacket with a pair of designer jeans and shell toe sneakers. Ladies can even sport the "Brenda-from-227" jeans with a halter top and pumps that will effortlessly merge throwback with fashion forward.
