A flood of interest in pictures of crop circles and the role of Google Earth in finding and viewing evidence of the phenomena is the Web buzz today. Have aliens landed or is it a new hoax? No, but again we find that Google may dictate its own search trends at will and search trends influence public interest.

The culprit? Today the Google logo (nicknamed the Google doodle) contains a picture of a Google logo crop circles, UFO -- Google doodle mysterycrop circle and UFO. Meanwhile new photos of crop circle appearances have littered random websites.

National Geographic is running with the story, for one, providing a good starting point for crop circle research. The Guardian also hosts some interesting crop circle pictures.

As for the new interest in this unexplained mystery, Google first caused a similar surge in interest about UFOs last week. The search term “unexplained phenomena” was eagerly keyed as Web surfers scratched their heads about Google’s doodle of the day.

The first Google UFO logo mystery was designed as a spaceship abducting one of the search engine leader’s trademarked letter “o's” and a click on said logo lead to search results with the phrase "unexplained phenomena" but provided no answers to the puzzle.  Additionally, a cryptic numeric twitter message, or tweet as its known, was beamed into cyberspace.

Later in the day, Google promised that an explanation was forthcoming concerning the mystery doodle. Apparently, today’s crop circle picture as shown above is a second clue and has been a subsequent boost to Google Earth usage... for viewing crop circle pictures.

Update: The Christian Science Monitor reports, “add to the mystery, Google posted the coordinates “51.327629, -0.5616088” in a cryptic Twitter tweet. It is said to be coordinates of Horsell, England ... where In “War of the Worlds,” HG Wells wrote that Horsell residents witnessed the first UFO landing.”

Did anyone notice that both Google doodle story dates end in the number "5," September 5 and September 15 respectively? Coincidence?
