One of the most disturbing trends occurring as an outcome of our declining economy is the decision that many are making towards self preservation in lieu of partnership. Helping hands of the past are now tucked firmly in the pockets of fear, selfishness and greed. To preserve the interest of self worth and position is to lose that of business generosity and assistance. Fear is crippling the most sacred principal of ‘pay it forward’ and ‘you are not what you say but rather what you do’.

It should come as no surprise I guess. When the media is feeding us large helpings of corporate greed, scandal and profit taking why should anyone feel like they can change the course of the larger economic machine. We are no longer cogs in the wheel; we are now merely particles of pavement being run over by the wheel we helped to create. Instead of reaching deeper to aid there is a trend of isolationism that is only further helping to fuel the economic downturn and assure a worse outcome than that which has already been realized. There is no longer the understanding, desire or willingness to practice the power that each and every one of us has to affect change.

How can we ever expect a true recovery if we do not lend assistance to our fellow economy partners? How can we expect profit without expense? How can we expect long-term partnership without the giving that is normally associated? No longer can be found the norm of reciprocity, it is now all take and no give.

It is a choice to be a spectator or a participant in this new game. It is a choice to turn your back on someone in need, someone trying to start something new or someone taking a risk that may not readily appear to have any personal reward. It is a choice to not understand that decisions now, will reign especially relevant to those which whom an adverse decision has been rendered.

Those is need will not easily forget the current circumstance and will not look back with knowledge that they weathered a light storm. Rather, they will remember the tidal wave of change that they experienced. They will remember those that aided in their voyage and those that hindered their trip to recovery. For those that made the choice to help, they will be gifted with new partnerships that will stand the test of time far beyond current situation. For those that made the choice to ignore, a different future altogether will occur.

As the restaurateur, who reads the nightly customer feed-back, knows. Rare is the compliment; however it does not mean that a many more good experience were not had. More often is the compliant, for people are quick to point out the negatives and those negatives snow ball into much larger form if too consistent. Those that shout the negative are louder, more persistent and more damaging. Is it not in everyone’s interest to remain a positive experience rather than a series of ‘NOs’, ‘MAYBEs’ or ‘I’LL GET BACK TO YOUs’?

What will your ‘customer feed-back’ card read when all the dust has settled?
