According to Insurance.com’s latest RateWatch study, Newark drivers are quoted the highest annual automobile insurance rates in the U.S.

The average yearly car insurance premium quote for all states in the RateWatch survey was $1,804 as of October 2009.

This represents a 5.6% decline from the national average annual rate of $1,908 in January 2009, and amounts to an average annual savings of $104 per insured.

The follow list shows the 12 American cities with the highest annual car insurance premiums. Figures are based on data from RateWatch’s interactive maps on Insurance.com for October 2009.

  1. Newark, New Jersey … $2,749 average annual premium (up 9.7% or $242 from January 2009)
  2. New Orleans, Louisiana … $2,423 (down 7.9% or $208)
  3. Wilmington, Delaware … $2,391 (down 4% or $100)
  4. Baltimore, Maryland … $2,328 (up 6.2% or $135)
  5. Providence, Rhode Island … $2,249 (down 8.9% or $220)
  6. Louisville, Kentucky … $2,102 (up 5.2% or $103)
  7. Huntington, West Virginia … $2,076 (down 0.8% or $17)
  8. Jacksonville, Florida … $2,074 (up 0.6% or $12)
  9. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania … $2,071 (down 9.6% or $220)
  10. Bridgeport, Connecticut … $2,042 (down 2.3% or $49)
  11. Detroit, Michigan … $1,998 (down 5.7% or $120)
  12. Las Vegas, Nevada … $1,946 (down 10.8% or $236).

Even though average car insurance rates for the above cities are among the nation’s highest, drivers in 8 of these cities are benefiting from lower premium quotes compared with earlier in the year.

Consumers in Newark, Baltimore, Louisville and Jacksonville continue to face increasing auto insurance premiums.
