What keeps you going back to your favorite bookstore? There must be a certain sentiment charismatique about your preferred book depository. When you walk into the store, there must be some potent literary sensation permeating about you — otherwise, why do you keep going back?

One bookstore any literary intellect should frequent is San Francisco’s own The Green Arcade, a choice bookstore crammed with controversial, enlightening, bizarre and eccentric books. Patrick Marks, the bookstore proprietor, runs The Green Arcade with a warm smile and an impressive grasp of worldly knowledge. What’s it like inside? The Green Arcade has an ambiance that projects emotions ranging from living room-style comfort to intellectual curiosity to an all fung shui peace of mind. There’s a jukebox subtly spilling melodic tunes that relax, entice and refresh one’s personal psyche. And the walls of The Green Arcade are festooned with vibrant pieces of striking local art, some even painted by an over 90-year-old woman who wields a strong brush.

Check out The Green Arcade at 1680 Market Street in San Francisco. Ask Patrick about what’s hot in the literary world. Talk to him about controversial issues. And perhaps even ask him to show you the Barack Obama votive candles that possess a tinge of Catholic saintliness to them. Any way you go, this is a bookstore that literary enthusiasts would find themselves welcomed and at home.
