As some of you may know, a shot was fired at the house of controversial right wing commentator, Lou Dobbs on Oct 5.
I can think of no worse reaction to CNN’s Lou Dobbs commentaries than through any kind of threat of violence. This kind of behavior is completely inappropriate in the United States of America where tolerance of dissenting views is critical not only to rational discourse but to the continued progress of the civilized world.
However, I disagree with those who claim the press is not giving sufficient coverage to this shooting, nor do I agree with some right wing conservatives that this was a true assassination attempt—after all, Dobbs was not even in view of the drive-by shooter. It looks more like a warning that could have had tragic results had the bullet struck his wife who was outside his home at the time.
Although myself and others may disagree with Dobbs and other conservatives on the subject of immigration and especially illegal immigration, we all agree on his fundamental right to speak without fear of retribution. This is what separates a free people from those shackled with fundamentalism, hatred, ignorance, bigotry, and intolerance, which are all too common in today’s world.
I strongly support the arrest of those involved. However, don’t automatically assume the perpetrators were necessarily connected in any way with those who support comprehensive immigration reform and a more open immigration policy based on a fact-based, rational debate.
