Networking giant CISCO has created the One Million Acts of Green website to record "acts of green" by people and businesses all over the world. The site displays the number of acts of green both in the US and globally along with the amount of greenhouse gases the acts have prevented. The OMAOG site is a feature of CISCOs Greennexus site, which their home page says "is an environmental social networking website that provides people, organizations, and businesses with the ability to share, publish, and contribute green knowledge with the purpose of reducing our collective environmental impact."
The OMAOG Canada site where the program began reached one million acts in Canada on February 4, 2009, six months after it began. The current site now tracks global acts.
Nitin Kawale, president of Cisco Canada, said in February that "Cisco is proud to be part of this unique program which clearly demonstrates the Human Network Effect: that when we come together on the network with a common purpose, we can collectively drive social change."
The company has chosen a positve approach in reinforcing its brand throughout the world and has said it considers environmental sustainability a top priority. Strategy Magazine, in its May 2009 issue said, "Cisco wanted to engage consumers and employees and demonstrate how people can use the web to connect and collectively work towards a common goal - one act at a time. The "human network effect" is Cisco's umbrella marketing vision, demonstrating that the internet is more than a network of computers; it's a network of people. OMAoG is an evolution of Cisco's global "Human Network" campaign, bringing to life the power and potential of human connection."
The site also offers free blogs, forums, and educational resources for individuals and teachers.
