The sustainable food movement has been serving up quite a spread of food flicks in recent years. There was Super Size Me and Sustainable Table, now Food, Inc. is out. This week Fresh comes to Bay Area theaters with shows in San Francisco on Friday, June 12, and in Berkeley on Monday, June 15.
Distressed by the state of our food system, filmmaker Ana Sofia Joanes set out to make a documentary that would shake herself and others out of deer-in-the-headlights inaction. Instead of all doom and gloom, Joanes found inspiration and hope in the stories of the people she interviewed across the country -- and it is those stories that she presents in Fresh.
From the film's Synopsis: "Fresh celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. Each has witnessed the rapid transformation of our agriculture into an industrial model, and confronted the consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and morbid obesity. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision for a future of our food and our planet.
"Among several main characters, FRESH features urban farmer and activist, Will Allen, the recipient of MacArthur’s 2008 Genius Award; sustainable farmer and entrepreneur, Joel Salatin, made famous by Michael Pollan’s book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma; and supermarket owner, David Ball, challenging our Wal-Mart dominated economy."
Joanes related her own inspiring story recently on Huffington Post. It's well worth a read.
And if the reviews are anything to go by, Fresh is worth catching too. You'll have two chances this coming week in the Bay Area.
