The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is soliciting nominations for its second annual Growing Green Awards, honoring leaders in sustainable food.

Nominations are being accepted until December 4, 2009 in four categories:

Food Producer: Farmers or other food producers, including aquaculture, who employ innovative techniques to sustain agriculture, the natural environment, workers and community;
Business Leader: Entrepreneurs who effectively use the marketplace to promote sustainable food systems, develop infrastructure that enables producers to be more sustainable, or advance sustainable innovations anywhere along the supply chain from farm to fork;
Thought Leader: Visionaries who advance sustainability as it relates to food through creative research, public education, and outreach.
Water Steward: Farmers or other food producers who have made extraordinary contributions in demonstrating water efficiency, sustainable water use and the protection of water quality.

For complete criteria and to make a nomination, visit Growing Green Awards on the NRDC website. The Growing Green Awards are widely publicized and winners in all categories will receive special recognition. In addition, a $10,000 cash prize will be awarded to the person selected in the Food Producer category.

In 2009, five of the nine finalists were from the San Francisco Bay Area. They were Judith Redmond of Full Belly Farm in Guinda, Calif., Fedele Bauccio from Bon Appetit Management Co. in Palo Alto, Thaleon Tremain from Pachamama Coffee Coop in Davis, Ann Cooper with the Berkeley Unified School District  in Berkeley, and Sibella Kraus from Sustainable Agriculture Education (SAGE), also in Berkeley.
