Deborah Needleman is here with Home and Living today. We're excited to have her as she is an author, editor, and expert in interior design—I'll let her give you the details—and she has a fun quiz...oh, let's just get to it...

Deborah's background and areas of expertise are:

Bio: Deborah Needleman was the founding editor-in-chief of Domino, a magazine whose mission was to make stylish decorating accessible to all. She is also co-author of "Domino: The Book of Decorating: A Room-by-Room Guide to Creating a Home that Makes You Happy".

Deborah has written on interior design, style and gardening for The New York Times, Slate, House & Garden and The Huffington Post. She has also appeared as an expert on these topics for The Today Show, Good Morning America, Anderson Cooper 360° and CNN’s American Morning.

Needleman lives with her family in New York City, and loves to garden, entertain and hang out with her children.

Q.: Deborah, How did you hook up with HomeGoods?

A.: They asked me to create the StyleScope quiz for them and I was thrilled because creating a quiz like this is something I've always wanted to do!

Q.: What are some of the properties of the StyleScope quiz? Was it difficult to create?

A.: The idea of the quiz is that we all have a basic style foundation, but then we each give that style our own personal twist. One person might be classically traditional and another person may be a sort of funky traditionalist who tweaks traditional pieces with crazy colors or something. There are really an infinite number of ways to describe all the styles people have. For HomeGoods, we narrowed it down to 16 different style types, with the idea that the first word in your StyleScope is how you personalize your core style which is the second word.

Q.: Have you gotten feedback about the Quiz, can you share some player’s reactions?

A.: Yes, people have reacted like it's a horoscope that reads their decorating stars, so to speak!

Q.: How should StyleScope quiz takers use their information?

A.: The idea is that this is a tool, and can be one of several tools that people use to help them shop for their home and decorate. I think it is great to put words to your own style so that you can use them as a filter to weed out things that aren't right for you. I am a Bohemian Classic, for example, so when I'm in a store and I see a super trendy piece I think looks really cool, I may recognize that eventually I won't really want to live it. I've bought very of-the-moment things like flokati rugs and Philippe Stark chairs and then ended up giving them away because I really want things with a more timeless design. If I had my StyleScope then, I probably wouldn't have made those mistakes!!

Q.: I took the quiz and my result was “Dramatic Eclectic.” I was more pleased than surprised but admit I was torn between some of the examples—would you say that’s a perfect illustration of “eclectic”—being torn between choices?

A.: Well, nearly everyone with any style is a bit eclectic and has a wide range of things they like, so yes it could mean you appreciate many different styles. But eclectic can also be a little dangerous, meaning you want or like everything, and need to refine a bit! I'm jealous, though, that you're 'Dramatic'! I wish I was gutsier and could be bolder like you! You are a risk-taker, while I'm afraid to go out on a decorating limb!

Q.: The sweepstakes at the end of the quiz is a great/fun addition for readers - how do you see it fitting with the quiz?

A.: Quite simply, I think that just gets more people to take the quiz as an incentive to win some prizes! People like prizes!

Q.: Do you have any design tips for the Home and Living Readers?

A.: It sounds corny, but the point of this quiz is to encourage people to be true to themselves and to shop and decorate in a way that suits their life and their own style.

I think it's great to play around with accessories which can easily be moved around or switched out. Having unique things in your home that appeal to you, or speak to you in some way, is what makes a house interesting and warm and personal. We should always be on the lookout for things that are special and beautiful to us. And I think sometimes people underestimate what they already have - decorators and stylists are always moving their furniture and objects around. Experiment! Have fun and collect and use things that you find beautiful.
