Wallpapers for Windows is a new product to me and I had so much fun working with the samples. I think this is an economical way
to insulate, decorate, and gain privacy. Here then, is Larry Cashion, President of EtchArt, LLC for Wallpaper for Windows.
Q.: Hello, Larry, thanks for being a guest. Can you tell Readers a little about your background?
A.: After college, I worked for nine years in design engineering on the space shuttle program at Kennedy Space Center. It was very rewarding, but after awhile I wanted to do something different and became a franchisee of the Invisible Fence Company. I was amazed at how well the product kept dogs in the yard and the technology seemed like something that might have a breakthrough use still to be discovered. When the Invisible Fence patents were about to expire, we decided it was time to sell the company.
Q.: What was Wallpaper for Windows start? Is this your brainchild?
A.: Yes, but it wasn’t my original idea for the Wallpaper For Windows technology. After we sold the company, I was living in Daytona Beach trying to decide what to do. I saw an infomercial about a removable/reusable decal that kids could put on the sides of their parent's car to make the car look cool while the kids were driving it, and it could be removed when their parents were using the car. I thought this is the perfect NASCAR product. It would print the various drivers’ car numbers on a circle, like the race cars have on their car doors, and then it lets the fans show their favorite drivers. But NASCAR wanted too much money and I had to drop the idea.
As part of developing the NASCAR idea, I produced a little stained glass cross for my church to use as a fundraiser at the fall carnival. The crosses were very popular and people kept talking about how much they liked them. I did some research and was surprised to find there was nothing on the market that people could use to decorate their homes other than expensive stained glass. So I started re-developing the product to be an affordable way for people to decorate windows and glass doors with the beauty of etched and stained glass. That is how Wallpaper For Windows came to be: just another great example of “Made in the U.S.A." smarts and know-how.
Q.: I tested out the product and I am very surprised how easy it is to install. Can you comment on that?
A.: That is the beauty and the basis of the adhesive-free product we created. It is almost impossible not to have a nice result. It was developed to be an easy do-it-yourself product that anyone could do without having to hire a professional installer. Unlike adhesive films, it’s not susceptible to crinkling or creasing.
Q.: Could you also talk about some of Wallpaper for Windows specifications?
A.: The frosted and etched glass designs have special glass particles in them that reproduce the sparkle of real etched glass. The stained glass colors are rich and vibrant because of the special inks we created for the product. But equally important, it’s an eight-mil adhesive-free vinyl film that adheres to glass much like a magnet to steel. Like a magnet, Wallpaper For Windows remains adhered to the glass until its time to redecorate. When it’s time to redecorate, it is easily removed from the glass.
Q.: Where can this product be found?
A.: People can find Wallpaper For Windows online and at a number of independent, regional and national paint and decorating centers. Our website, www.wallpaperforwindows.com, has a feature that lets people search by city and state to find a local retailer, or they can order on the website.
Q.: I like the fact that this could probably save some energy, does it?
A.: Yes, it sure does. The film is eight-mil thick, which is four times thicker than most window films and provides energy saving benefits.
Q.: Is it known to block heat? Would it protect furniture or colored upholstery?
Yes, this vinyl film has a very slow thermal transfer rate and basically acts as an insulator on the glass. When the sun is on the glass, radiant heat is slower to heat up the room, and it is quicker to cool off when the direct sunlight is off the glass. We add UV inhibitors to the film when it is manufactured to help protect furnishings from the sun's UV rays.
Q.: What is the best application of this product you’ve ever seen?
A.: That’s a hard question to answer because the product has so many reasons for being used. Some people have windows and glass doors with horrible views. They never open the blinds and they decorate around the closed blinds. Adding a privacy stained- or etched- glass design to the glass instantly transforms a negative feature of the room into a positive.
There is the panache of being used in places like The Plaza in New York City. But the application I’m proudest of is how much a room changes when the sliding glass doors are decorated with Wallpaper For Windows. Sliders are a dominant feature in most rooms. But in reality, sliders are a wall which you cannot paint nor hang a picture on. Using Wallpaper For Windows on sliders is one of the best decorating values on the market and I am very proud of how many people enjoy their family, living or dining rooms more due to the beauty and benefits of the product.
Q.: Is there anything you’d like to add?
A.: Todays’ decorating is all about value. Wallpaper For Windows delivered great value when it began and still delivers great value today. Instead of spending $5 –10,000 on a remodeling project, people are recognizing that $25 -$100 worth of Wallpaper For Windows can make a nice improvement to a room without being a major undertaking.
Over the years we have sold more than 500 miles of Wallpaper For Windows; covering countless doors and windows and improving the living space in thousands of homes and offices. It just as much fun creating a new design today as it was when we made the first ones.
Thank you, Larry.
