Q.: Mike, will you tell Home and Living Readers a little about your background?
A.: I have been with Black & Decker® for 12 years in a variety of sales and marketing roles. For the last 2 years I have been the group product manager for Cordless Drills.
Q.: There
is a new product launch for Black & Decker, what’s that about?
A.: Black & Decker’s new SmartSelect™ family of tools were designed to eliminate the common frustration of choosing the right settings. Every SmartSelect tool features an easy to use dial that allows the user to select their project icon and the tool automatically adjusts for optimal results.
Q.: What are some of the properties of, say, the cordless power drill that make it a good product?
What is it about the new technology that might make a homeowner want to replace his present tool?
A.: Without a cord to tie you down, cordless drills offer ultimate convenience, allowing you to easily complete projects all around the home. Typically, users need to select the correct numerical clutch setting and speed setting to complete a project and oftentimes achieve poor results because the setting they chose was not ideal. We focused on this area of frustration when we developed SmartSelect Technology. With the SmartSelect Cordless Drill, all the user needs to do is select the project icon on the clutch and the drill automatically adjusts the power and speed to provide optimal results.
Q.: How are your customers using the power drill in their homes?
A.: Cordless drills are great for a wide variety of projects from assembling furniture and hanging décor to more challenging projects like building a deck or remodeling a basement. Once customers buy a cordless drill they usually end up using it around the house a lot more than they originally expected to because they are so convenient.
Q.: What is the one coolest feature about this product?
A.: The SmartSelect dial is definitely the best and most innovative feature on the drill. By eliminating the confusion associated with choosing the right clutch and speed setting, the SmartSelect Cordless Drill allows users to complete a project the correct way the first time. This ultimately will help people save time and money when completing a home improvement project. Another nice feature on the new SmartSelect Cordless Drill is the battery charge indicator. Simply press a button and you can see how much power is left in the battery.
Q.: You have a lot of other new products in this line, what are they?
A.: The SmartSelect family of products also includes the LINEFINDER™ Jigsaw, Complete Sanding Kit, and Cordless Lithium Screwdriver. Using the SmartSelect dial on the Jigsaw, the user can select the project icon and the tool automatically adjusts the orbital setting and speed for the cut. Also included on the jigsaw is a LINEFINDER feature that illuminates your cut line for improved visibility and accuracy. The SmartSelect dial on the sander allows you to select the project icon and the tool helps you select the right sanding base while automatically adjusting the speed for optimal results. The Complete Sanding Kit features random orbit, detail, flush, and finish sanding bases with a tool-free base change. The SmartSelect Cordless Lithium Screwdriver features a magnetic screw holder so you can avoid dropping screws.
