In a time when Hollywood not only opposes our own President's efforts to win a war and seems more sympathetic to terrorists held at Gitmo than our own soldiers, these celebrities stand out. Of course, most Hollywood leftist radicals (like Baldwin, Penn, Rosie O'Donnell) say they support the troops, just not the mission. Fair enough, but how many of them will actually prove it by taking action to show they support the troops?
Words are cheap and the American people notice how Hollywood has treated our soldiers both in real life and in those anti-military films. Notice how those films which portray our soldiers as alternately marauding, barbarian hordes or victims who were duped by a “9/11 was an inside job” type nutjob, conspiracy fantasy. I'm thinking of “Shooter” here- great action, horribly written, everybody in the government but the protagonist was a bad guy. Typical leftist, anti-US government propaganda.
But the celebrities on this list have proven by word and deed that they love this country and are willing to stand by our troops no matter how unpopular that may make them among the liberal, Hollywood elite. And yes, there are people in Hollywood who are so far left they actually do hate our military.
Number 5: Jennifer Love Hewitt
As a young pop idol/TV/movie star Hewitt has been one of the youngest big name celebrities to stand up for the troops. She has even taken part in videos for the Veterans Administration to bring the story of Americas veterans to young people. She visits wounded troops at military hospitals. I think she has not visited the troops in Iraq or Afghanistan, whereas other big name actresses (like Angelina Jolie and Scarlett Johansson) have (something she should change soon and let me be the first to offer my services as her escort). But her support to veterans and service members has been very public and vocal. Surprisingly, I have heard many times that her dad was a soldier but in researching this I haven't seen anything about that. I heard her say her granddad is a vet. Looks like a bogus rumor.
Number 4: Chuck Norris
A veteran himself. He joined the Air Force in the 50's. A native Oklahoman (me to). Man he looks good for his age doesn't he? Norris' brother died in Vietnam. He has made several trips to visit the troops and is universally loved and admired by them. It seems our troops affection for Chuck has even worn off on our Iraqi friends who love him as well.
Number 3: Robin Williams, Al Franken and Drew Carey
Yes, I know it's a bit of a cheat to lump them all together, but all three have been involved in several USO tours in the war zones. These men have left their obvious ideological differences at home for the sake of supporting the troops. Carey, by the way, is a former Marine. Williams lost me as a fan when he started the preachy movie roles, especially when he took on the health care industry for apparently having a lack of sense of humor. My thought? Just fix me doc and leave the comedy to comedians. I've never been a fan of Franklen, even before he became known for his liberal politics. But I am a fan when it comes to liberals who not only say they support the troops but get out there and put themselves in danger to show it. A big thank you to all of these men, especially Williams who is probably a superstar and could easily rest on his behind and still be famous.
Number 2: Toby Keith
Country music singer Toby Keith has been such a fantastic supporter of the military that his home state of Oklahoma (again me to) has passed a House resolution recognizing his dedication. The citation recognizes that Keith has participated in six USO tours. He often goes to forward deployed bases where no other celebrity has gone to perform for small crowds. On one such trip in Afghanistan the base was shelled by mortar fire during his show. He waited it out and then took back to the stage to finish the show. Suck that Taliban!
He lets US military eat for free at his restaurants. I'm pretty sure he does other more quiet things to help soldiers, stuff we will probably never know. Toby Keith is one Democrat unafraid to wear his patriotism on his sleeve, or even lapel.
Number 1: Wayne Newton
The loss of Bob Hope left a huge hole in the USO's ability to recruit star power. Taking up his historic role is Wayne Newton. Newton has been instrumental in reaching out to international celebrities to get them on the USO tours. In addition, he personally has performed in USO shows in every American conflict since Vietnam (except I think Somalia). He reaches out to known conservative and liberal performers (like Robin Williams and Al Franken) who give of their time to show Hollywood's support of our troops. We just can't over estimate how much this man has done for our troops.
I know there are more who deserve mention here like Gary Sinise. Maybe I will do another list when I get a chance. I hate leaving anyone out who supports the troops.
