Imagine that you are a citizen soldier, a national guard soldier or reservist, who signed up to serve your nation in a time of emergency. Now imagine that you can’t get a job because your employer's medical benefits would be invoked if you were called to duty and injured. If this PRNewswire article found at Yahoo News is correct, that will be the result of a new Obama Administration policy.
The leader of the American Legion states that he is he is "deeply disappointed and concerned" after meeting with the President over his new plan to shift $540 million from US funded vet care onto the insurance policies of the companies that employ veterans. The obvious consequence is that businesses will now see reservists as higher financial risks and the hiring of vets will decrease. Veterans will likely be hit with copayments for their treatments. Those companies that are veteran friendly will likely see a rise in premiums which will likely reduce the pay a veteran can expect to receive. This plan is a disaster, if true.
It also sends a signal to the veteran that this administration is abdicating itself of the financial burden of treating wounded vets who served this nation in war. If the Obama Administration intentionally wanted to destroy reservist and guard recruiting, this would be a very subtle way of doing it.
This story should make the Walter Reed barracks scandal look like a joke…but don’t expect the media to make a peep about it.
