A new british sniper rifle is being used in Afghanistan. The British Ministry of Defense has invited in the press to show off the new weapon.
From The Daily Mail:
British Army snipers call it 'the Silent Assassin' and it is the weapon the Taliban fear the most.
It is the British-made L115A3 Long Range Rifle which, in recent weeks, has killed scores of enemy fighters in Afghanistan.
In a new initiative on the front line, the Army is using sniper platoons to target the Taliban and 'The Long', as the snipers call it, can take out insurgents from a mile away.
The UK Telegraph:
With its unerring accuracy and powerful telescopic sight, the L115A3 virtually guarantees "one round, one kill" at ranges of more than a mile.
The weapon has been used with "phenomenal" success in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, where it is said to have had a major "psychological impact" on the Taliban. Last week the Army put the weapon on display and The Sunday Telegraph was asked to send the first newspaper journalist to test-fire the weapon on the Army's ranges in Warminster, Wiltshire, where the Support Weapons School is based.
The Sun has it as well.
This weapon is important because Afghanistan is a very different fght than Iraq was before. Native Afghan fighters are much more experienced than Iraqi insurgents. They actually aim their weapons instead of using the "pray and spray" method.
They also like to fight outside of villages and cities and mass for attacks. They are the perfect target, grouped together in the open, for a sniper
