This past weekend, the students of HYS’s Youth Symphony II (YSII) presented a first-rate performance at the Windward Mall in Kaneohe. Led by long-time YSII conductor Michael Nakasone, the orchestra performed a challenging program of Broadway hits, holiday tunes, and classical favorites.
After readings of the National Anthem and Hawaii Ponoi, the concert opened with a lively playing of von Suppe’s "Morning, Noon & Night in Vienna Overture." Quick fingers in the strings and solid playing in the winds made for a performance characterized by youthful enthusiasm and vigor.
The Von Suppe was followed by a light-hearted performance of the popular gypsy tune “Czardas” featuring concertmaster Justin Park, a student of Ignace Jang. Also on the program were selections from the Broadway musical Les Miserables and the holiday classic “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”
The highlight of the afternoon was an impressive rendition of selected movements from Mussorsky’s "Pictures at an Exhibition." Drawing a glorious and majestic tone from his young brass students, Maestro Nakasone’s lived up to his reputation as one of the Island’s treasured band educators. In spite of very minor technical slips, the students captured the power & grandeur of this classical standard and infused it with their own brand of youthful exuberance. A truly thrilling performance.
