Henry Phipps wanted the Phipps Conservatory to be something spectacular.
His partner Andrew Carnegie did the libraries and the Churches. Phipps liked things that were good for peoples’ mental and physical well being.
Designed by architect Adolf Balph in 1887, the Phipps was modeled after the Kew Gardens in England. In its’ time it was the largest and finest.
Over the generations, Pittsburghers and their springtime guests have visited the Phipps for the annual spring flower show. And they continue the tradition today.
If you have old photos you would like to share of family members at the Phipps, please forward them and I will be sure to post them on my site. It seems that every family passed through Pittsburgh on it’s way to where it was travelling.
Look at these kids in the slide show who visited the Phipps on Good Friday.
Mr. Phipps…..You did something spectacular indeed!
Children have and interactive experience with plants, nature and are in Mr Phipps' Victorian Glass House. More children are featured on the linked pages.
