Pittsburgh Port Authority to provide free shuttle service for pedestrians beginning Nov. 9

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 5, 2009

PITTSBURGH — Allegheny County Public Works today announced that beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Fri., Nov. 6, traffic on the Rankin Bridge will be shifted to the newly constructed lanes on the Waterfront-side of the bridge. Single-lane traffic will continue in each direction for the duration of construction, which is expected to last through October 2010.

Beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Mon., Nov. 9, the sidewalk on the main span of the Rankin Bridge will be closed for reconstruction. Port Authority has established a free-ride zone between Rankin and Whitaker to provide shuttle service across the bridge for pedestrians. The zone will be in effect on Mon., Nov. 9, and will last for the duration of bridge construction.

Pedestrians wishing to cross from Rankin to Whitaker may board the 59A West Mifflin bus on Braddock Avenue at the entrance ramp to Rankin Boulevard. When traveling in the opposite direction, they may board the 59A on Monongahela Boulevard at #1216. Signs will be posted at these temporary stops. Passengers traveling beyond these two points in either direction will be required to pay the appropriate fare.
