Ho Hum -- Kelly Slater Wins Another One
Every sport, it seems, has its dominant athlete.
Jordan, Gretsky, Woods -- you know the names. And, of course, you know Kelly Slater.
Seriously. Why even allow the guy to compete? He's just going to win anyway. Which is what he did at Trestles in San Onofre Thursday, inching closer to a record 9th title.
I'm not a huge fan of surf contests, but you've got to give Slater his due. Just as any guitarist with a clear head will tell you that Jimi Hendrix is the all-time greatest guitarist, any surfer will tell you that Slater is the most dominant on a board.
Now, of course, what he does is different than, say, what Laird Hamilton does. Or Joel Tudor. But it's easiest to measure surfers when they compete a lot. Which, of course, Slater does.
You've undoubtedly heard a lot about Slater's surfing. But did you know he was in a band called -- apprporiately enough -- The Surfers? He and fellow surfers Rob Machado and Peter King comprised this surf band. Slater has also performed on stage with better known musicians Eddie Vedder and Ben Harper.
I'll be discussing more surf music in future blogs. But I wanted to mention a film I forgot to note in my previous blog about surf movies. Because, while it did star animated penguins, "Surf's Up" was a great flick -- aided by Slater and Machado, who not only advised animators on the physics or surfing, but who also appeared as voice actors.
If you haven't seen "Surf's Up" because you think it's a dumb kids movie, go see it. It's well written, superbly cast and features great surf scenes. And, of course, one of its stars is Jeff Bridges, who plays the closest thing you'll see to his role in "The Big Lebowski."
