Beach and bubbles-You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make children happy
Last weekend we took my niece and nephew to the Museum of Science and Discovery in Fort Lauderdale. They are 4 and 5 years old and we knew there would be lots of things for them to see and do. Since it was supposed to rain, it seemed like a good idea.
Unfortunately, most of Broward County must have gotten the same idea as it was very crowded. It took about 30 minutes in line and cost $36.00 to get in for the four of us. While we had a good time, a lot of it was spent waiting in line, which at any age diminishes the fun factor.
The following day we got up early and took the kids to the beach before the rainstorms began. It cost $3.50 to park. The weather held out and we had the best time. I was looking at the people gathered on the beach. Young families, older couples, young singles and couples, people from many different ethnic groups were represented. They had one thing in common. They were all smiling, laughing and relaxing together. To see the picnics, swimming, Frisbee, ball playing and barbecues made we wonder why we didn’t come more often.
Once we got home, after the coloring books and cartoons lost their entertainment value, my niece suggested we play with the bubbles she brought. She had a little bottle of bubbles and some very cool looking bubble accessories. We all went out on the patio and had a ball blowing bubbles. What an awesome day. And it only cost $3.50!

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make children happy. When I was a young child we didn’t have a lot of fancy toys or video games. I remember many weekends at the beach with my brothers and mother. (Dad didn’t like the sand) Mom would pack tuna and egg salad sandwiches and a cooler of lemonade. I remember going to sleep after being at the beach and I could still hear the sounds of the ocean in my ears. I hope my mother knows what a small price she paid for what we got in return.
