From workshop sponsorships to league uniforms, it’s no secret that sportswear giant, Nike, has a vested interest in empowering youth and adults, be it via sports or other means. In 2008, the brand's commitment earned it the No. 3 spot on Corporate Responsibility Officer's list of the 100 Best Corporate Citizens. In keeping with its philanthropic mission, Nike recently unveiled its "Back Your Block" grant program.
The “Back Your Block” program will award grants to nonprofit groups which encourage youth to pursue excellence in sports, and in life. Nike plans to allocate and award $650,000 in two ways, via the national program and the community stores program.
With its national program, each Nike store will award a grant up to $2,500. Through its community stores program, Nike will provide multiple grants averaging $5,000 each. The Chicago area, along with Portland and New Orleans, has a unique opportunity to receive extra funding because there is a community store located on the city's South Side. Community stores are designed to help revitalize neighborhoods by providing employment opportunities and supporting volunteers and non-profits.
There are four Nike locations within the Chicagoland area:
Niketown
669 N. Michigan Avenue, Chicago
(312) 642-6363
Nike Factory Store (Community Store)
8501 S. Cottage Grove, Chicago

(630) 585-9568
